How Do You Know . . .

I’m willing to bet that more than once this has happened to you. Let’s say you’ve started a new business or a project that you’re not an expert in. What happens? You inevitably discover that there are a few things you need to know that you didn’t expect.

This has happened to me more than once, and as I get deeper into marketing, I keep finding there is more to learn.

What do I mean by this?

When I started Go Social Experts, I had been in business for over 30 years in other industries and I thought, how hard could it be? After all I already was good at the technical part of the business and I had systems that worked.

All I needed to do was get a few clients and maybe a staff person and start.

Well, the first clients were harder to get than I expected and once I started hiring staff, I had to develop systems for tracking who was doing what and how long everything took and . . .

You see in my previous businesses, which were retail orientated when someone came in the door, they were a hot prospect. Why else would they be in the store?

I was good at working the floor and helping these people and selling them what they needed, but at Go Social Experts we don’t have a front door, so we need to find our prospects in other places and nurture them over time.

All of that required a different skill set and knowledge base than I was used to.

And let’s not start with what it takes to train staff to work with clients as I wanted them to.

The message here is that in any project or business there are always more skills that need to be learned to keep moving forward and to keep seeing better results.

The challenge is that when you’re starting out you don’t know what you don’t know. In some training sessions I’ve been in, this will be labeled as unconscious incompetence. When I worked with the Boy Scouts, this was called Forming in the Stages of Development.

So how do you learn what you don’t know you don’t know?

That is a tough question.

There are two ways really.

First, you can experience it. You start the project or business and you find out quickly what you don’t know – the hard way.

The second option is you investigate ahead of time by finding blog posts about the topic or books about the subject or an online course or someone who can help you.

The key is that you’re alert to the fact that you don’t know everything you need to know.

Is there a way to shortcut this process?

The fastest way I know to shortcut the learning process is to work with a coach who has done what you’re looking to do.

Not only do they know what you need to do, they know how to do it.

After all it’s one thing to know what needs to happen and another entirely to be able to do it.

Think of it like this, if you’re a skier and you’re standing at the top of a mountain looking over the edge, you just hoping to make it down in one piece. If someone’s going to help guide you down, do you want to have someone who has read ten books on the subject teaching you or someone who has actually skied mountains before?

I know I feel better with an experienced person coaching me.

So, if you’re looking for someone to help you set up a Facebook marketing system find someone who’s done it before and hire them to help.

What you’ll spend in paying them you’ll save in the reduced number of costly and time-consuming mistakes you’ll make and the quicker the results will be overall.

Have a great day!
