Put One Foot In Front Of The Other

Quick… What movie does this come from?

Put one foot in front of the other

And soon you’ll be walking ‘cross the floor

Put one foot in front of the other

And soon you’ll be walking out the door

Got it?

It’s from Santa Claus is coming to town, released in 1970.

Since I’ve become a long-distance runner over the past couple of years this has been brought to my attention again.

After all, when you’re 20+ miles into a training run or a marathon it sometimes feels like all you can do is put one foot in front of the other.

But as long as you keep doing that and don’t stop you’ll get where you’re going, even if it takes a little longer than you thought.

What does this have to do with business?

Well, there are days when everything seems to flow smoothly. Everything is working great and life is good.

And then there are days when everything you touch seems to be a struggle. You know those days, the ones you get up a little late and then you’re out of milk for your cereal, and then there is a traffic jam on your way to work, and your workday hasn’t even started yet.

What do you do on days like this?

If you put one foot in front of the other, you’ll be in a different place at the end of the day then when you began. It may be only a few steps, but you’ve made progress.

Steady progress will get you to your goal. Maybe not as fast as you envisioned, but you’ll get there.

Mix this steady progress in with the sprints from the good days and you’ll reach your goal sooner than you thought.

This works in all areas of your business and life.

Just remember to keep going!

Have a great day!
