The Secret to Getting Things DONE

The Secret To Getting Things DONE

What’s the secret to getting things done?

Have you ever noticed that there are some projects that seem to stay there forever and others that you tackle right away?

Before getting going on a project, I lay out the tasks that need to be completed.

There are some projects that I get 2,3, or 4 items done on right away and then they seem to stall.

Other projects I tackle and complete them right away, even if they are long and complex.

Does this happen to you?

I was listening to a presenter recently and he asked if your projects were tied into your values. He wasn’t referring to honesty, integrity, generosity etc. he was referring to what is most important to you in your life.

He meant things like family, health, learning new skills, accumulating wealth and so on.

His premise was that when your projects are lined up with your values you’ll keep going when the going gets tough. If they’re not, you will stop as soon as you run into an obstacle.

I looked at my stalled projects through new eyes. Were the ones that have been there the longest with no progress tied to my values?

 Nope, they weren’t.

The ones that I had completed were connected to my values.

The first step in moving all your projects into alignment with your values is identifying what those values are. No one else can do it for you. You have to be the one to sit down and analyze what’s important to you. After all, they’re your values.

If you aren’t sure where to start, analyze what you look forward to doing every day and what gives you energy. If after you’ve done a task you’re drained, it’s probably not tied into one of your core values.

The next step is to identify your dreams and what you want to have some day. This is a fun exercise. Let your mind run free. You have the rest of your life to accomplish it.

You look at what your dreams are and analyze them. Which are tied to your values and which aren’t? The ones that don’t go off the list. Why chase them when you really don’t want them?

After that, you look at what you need to do step by step. Each step becomes a goal. This process will give you a step by step process that will lead you to each of your dreams. They’ll help you feel rewarded as you reach them because they all lead you to your goals.

I’m going through the process of reviewing my goals and plans and aligning them with my values.

This process is keeping me on track with what’s important to me. Plus, it’s helping me get more done in a shorter time than ever before.

Now I’m not saying that I never do anything I don’t want to do. There are some items that have to be done. What I am saying is that I’m minimizing the projects that I keep myself if they are outside what gives me energy. The key to this is delegation.
