When do you stop marketing?

Have you ever thought about that?

How much money could you save if you didn’t spend anything on marketing?

Would it affect your business?

What if you have a physical location, people drive by all the time and come in so won’t they keep coming in?

Or your website has great SEO, lots of people find it and you assume they’ll keep coming back.

Or not . . .

I had this conversation with a client recently and it keeps returning to my mind.

He was thinking he should slow down or stop his marketing. They were running out of capacity and why not save the money.

In my past experience, I’ve tried the let’s stop marketing, and do you know what?

For the first few weeks you look brilliant, nothing changes.

Then over time, you find that your sales start dropping off and by the time six months have gone by you’re in a world of hurt.

You’ve processed everyone in your sales funnel and no one new is coming in.

Once you reach this point it takes time to rebuild your pipeline so you’re looking at several months of challenges before you get back to the level you were at.

This happens in businesses with a physical location as well as service and online businesses.

So here is the truth: you never stop marketing, unless you’re planning on going out of business.

Creating awareness about your business and then moving people from stage to stage in your customer journey is an ongoing effort.

You can slow down a bit as your business matures and you have more recurring revenue and repeat customers, but if you aren’t careful, you’ll lose some of these repeat clients and end up with a declining business with no one to replace them.

The best answer to this is to create a system that works on autopilot.

Yes, it is possible to create these systems.

Then you can assign others to maintain the systems and your business keeps growing, leaving you free for other issues. After all, there is more to being a business owner than marketing and marketing systems. You have operations, inventory, finance, and human resources to name a few.
